DRACONIAN Return to the Darkness With In Somnolent Ruin

Six years after Under a Godless Veil, Swedish gothic doom veterans DRACONIAN return with In Somnolent Ruin - a dark, atmospheric and deeply melancholic album that feels both familiar and significant.

And there is one particularly big reason why.

Lisa Johansson is back.

Johansson, who fronted DRACONIAN's first five albums before leaving the band in 2011, officially returns to the studio line up alongside vocalist Anders Jacobsson. For a band whose identity has long been shaped by the contrast between clean vocals and devastating growls, her return gives In Somnolent Ruin an added sense of occasion.

Across nine tracks, In Somnolent Ruin explores alienation, mortality, emotional darkness and the search for direction. Plato's theory of the soul became a recurring theme during the writing process, while Anders Jacobsson's poetic lyrics provide much of the album's emotional weight.

Musically, DRACONIAN aren't trying to reinvent themselves and that's no bad thing.

The band have spent decades developing their particular blend of crushing doom, gothic atmosphere, mournful melody and extreme vocals. In Somnolent Ruin embraces that identity rather than running from it, while the refreshed lineup gives the familiar DRACONIAN sound renewed energy.

The opening “I Welcome Thy Arrow” immediately sets the mood, combining haunting melodies with the band's trademark vocal contrast. At eight minutes, it gives the album plenty of room to breathe before “The Monochrome Blade” and “The Face of God” bring additional pace and intensity.

Then comes “Anima”, featuring Swedish artist Daniel Änghede, adding another vocal dimension as the album explores darker impulses, disorientation and the feeling of being lost.

One of the album's strengths is its willingness to let atmosphere do some of the heavy lifting.

“Asteria Beneath the Tranquil Sea” acts as a short interlude before “Cold Heavens”, which explores the fragile balance between life and death and delivers the album's most intense vocal performance.

“Misanthrope River” takes a slower, more reflective route, opening with an extended instrumental passage and narration from Simon Bibby. It is followed by “Lethe”, the album's seven-minute closer, which draws on the Greek mythological river of forgetfulness.

Thematically, it makes for a fitting conclusion to a record so concerned with memory, identity and the darker corners of the human experience.

In Somnolent Ruin isn't an album that needs to shout about its return.

Instead, DRACONIAN lean into what they do best: enormous doom riffs, gothic melancholy, atmospheric arrangements and the dramatic interplay between clean and harsh vocals.

The return of Lisa Johansson is naturally the headline, but the album works because it feels like more than a reunion exercise. This is a fully realised DRACONIAN record that connects with the band's earlier identity while reflecting the line up and experience they've developed since.

There are no attempts at unnecessary reinvention here. In Somnolent Ruin is about atmosphere, emotion and immersion and when DRACONIAN hit that sweet spot, they remain exceptionally effective.

For longtime fans, Johansson's return makes this an especially welcome chapter. For newcomers, it offers a strong introduction to DRACONIAN's gothic doom world.

Dark, mournful and beautifully heavy, In Somnolent Ruin is a record that invites you into the shadows and is in no particular hurry to let you leave.
